SYLMAR, CALIFORNIA (April 16, 2018) – An unidentified woman was killed after being struck by a Metrolink in Monday evening.(map)
The 24-year-old woman was standing with her boyfriend at the train’s platform, located at the 12200 block of Frank Modugno Drive near Truman Street. Initial reports indicate that the woman was leaning back and forth near the edge of the train’s platform, lost her footing and fell backwards onto the platform. After falling between the train and the platform, her boyfriend jumped down to the tracks and tried rescuing her; however, it is unclear whether the woman was unconscious at the time and unable to move out of the way. The the Antelope Valley train, traveling at 35 mph, Palmdale bound, struck and killed the woman. Her boyfriend had to jump out of the way, but had his leg struck by the train.
The 24-year-old woman was tragically pronounce dead on scene. Her boyfriend’s leg was hit by the train, but but was not severely injured. The Metrolink Antelope Valley Line 285 was suspended after striking down the young woman.
It is unclear at the time whether the train conductor attempted to slow down to the restricted speed, which, at 20 mph, would permit stopping within one half the range of vision. It is unknown whether there were guardrails installed alongside the train tracks to prevent tragic accidents, as such. The investigation into Monday’s fatal train incident is ongoing to determine cause and liability.
