TOPEKA, KANSAS (July 31, 2017) – Two people that were killed in Monday night in a small plane crash near Topeka have been identified, according to a local news source. (map)
61 year old pilot William Leeds and 55 year old copilot James Bergman were inside a 1965 Piper PA-30 airplane that was approaching the runway at Billard Airport around 8:30, when the plane reportedly missed the runway and struck the ground instead.
Both William Leeds and James Bergman were tragically killed in the accident. William Leeds was a well known doctor in the area, and was reportedly flying the plane under the supervision of James Bergman, who was his instructor. Initial reports indicate that James Bergman had several pilot licenses at the time of the crash.
The airport control tower closes at 7:00 pm, so there was no communication between the pilot and the tower prior to the accident. The accident remains under investigation by the FAA and the NTSB at this time to determine cause and liability.
