The accident happened around 4:30 pm at Whittier’s Penn Park. A wedding party was posing underneath a tree for photos when the large Eucalyptus tree snapped and fell onto the people beneath it, trapping 20 people beneath the large branches.
One woman was killed, identified as 61 year old Margerita Mojarro, the mother of the bride. Five others were hurt and hospitalized, including the bride’s young niece.
The park remains closed as of Monday as investigations continue. The city of Whittier is investigating to find out why the tree fell over, as they employ an arborist to manage the parks and city trees. The investigation is ongoing to determine cause and liability in this tragic accident.
