“2 Teenagers Killed in Semi Collision”
FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZONA (July 27, 2017) – 15-year-old Nicolas Minard was involved in a fatal collision on State Route 87 near Shea Boulevard Tuesday evening, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. (map)
The accident occurred approximately before 7:30 p.m. An initial report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety stated a semi truck carrying lumber was traveling southbound on State Route 87. The driver of the semi failed to stop at a red light and collided with another vehicle traveling northbound on State Route 87 from Shea Boulevard. The impact caused the semi to collide into the median and collide with another vehicle. Both vehicles struck two more vehicles. The semi rolled on its side losing the lumber which hit another vehicle, according to Arizona DPS.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the collision area. Minard was was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teenager later identified as 14-year-old Kaillie Plante, was transported to a local hospital where she later died.
Four other motorist were involved in the collision. 34-year-old Danielle Plante and 60-year-old Jeannie Londin sustained injuries. Its is unknown of the severity of their injuries. 54-year-old Sheila Mei and 70-year-old Joy Ford were involved in the collision but did not appear to sustain any injuries from the collision..
The driver of the semi, identified as 51-year-old John Girssom thought the traffic light was yellow. However, Arizona DPS stated that Girssom appeared to have run the red light.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the collision.
