TIMES SQUARE, NEW YORK (May 18, 2017) – Alyssa Elsman has been identified as the woman killed in a tragic accident on Thursday in Times Square, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 12:00 pm. A maroon Honda Accord being driven by a 26 year old man suddenly made a u turn on 7th Avenue at 42nd Street, and began driving down the sidewalk. He drove for three and a half blocks before crashing at 45th Street and 7th Avenue. He struck 23 pedestrians as he careened down the sidewalk for an unknown reason.
18 year old Alyssa Elsman was tragically killed in the accident. Her 13 year old sister was also injured in the incident and rushed to a hospital, as were 21 other pedestrians. Four were said to be in critical condition, three suffered serious injuries, and 15 suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The driver was identified as 26 year old Richard Rojas from the Bronx, a Navy Veteran. Rojas initially attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by authorities and civilians at the scene. He reportedly punched a police officer as he was being taken into custody.
