The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on the westbound side of Highway 54 near Woodman Street. 87-year-old Thomas Castaneda was traveling as a passenger in a medical transport van from St. Paul’s PACE center, along with several other senior citizens. The van collided with a Honda Accord and then a big rig for unknown reasons, before careening off the road, going through a guardrail and overturning.
Thomas Castaneda was rushed to a hospital with severe head trauma and serious leg injuries. He was tragically pronounced dead on Saturday as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. The other three passengers in the van and the driver suffered minor injuries in the accident. The investigation is ongoing to determine cause and liability.
