The accident happened on the eastbound side of Interstate 70 near Terre Haute. Traffic began to slow down due to a fire near the freeway, and a semi truck driver failed to notice the declining speed. He slammed into a passenger car, then hit the back of a flatbed truck carrying steel bars.
Three people in the passenger car were all killed, and the driver of the flatbed truck also died after the steels bars he was carrying skewered the cab. The condition of the semi truck driver is unknown. The accident remains under open investigation to determine cause and liability.
