EUREKA, CALIFORNIA (March 9, 2017) – Shirley Hoyt has been identified as the woman killed in a pedestrian accident on U.S Highway 101 on Thursday morning, according to a local news source. (map)

The accident happened around 11:14 a.m. near Fourth Street and S Street. A woman identified as 56-year-old Shirley Hoyt was attempting to cross US 101, inside of a marked crosswalk. Several other vehicles stopped at the crosswalk to allow Shirley to pass, but a vehicle driven by a 56 year old man sped through at around 50 MPH and struck Hoyt.

Shirley Hoyt was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The driver that struck her was identified as 56 year old Larry Nielsen. Nielsen attempted to flee the scene, but a Good Samaritan gave chase and stopped Nielsen until authorities arrived.
