SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (February 18, 2017) – A wrong way driver attempting to flee police on Saturday was involved in a fatal collision on Interstate 5, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 7:00 am when Sacramento Sheriff’s deputies ran the plate of a red Toyota Sienna and discovered it was stolen. The minivan refused to pull over and began fleeing police, heading the wrong way on J Street. The van then entered Interstate 5 using the J Street off-ramp, and began driving northbound on the southbound side of the freeway. Police then terminated the pursuit for safety concerns, and the minivan continued on for half a mile before colliding with a box truck.
The two men inside the minivan, identified as 26 year old George Cooper and 29 year old Dwayne Zachary, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the box truck was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be extricated by responding emergency personnel before being taken to a hospital.. The accident remains under open investigation at this time.
