MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (August 2, 2017) – Ruth Berg and John Carlson were identified as the two people killed in an explosion at a Minneapolis school on Wednesday, according to a local news source. (map)
The explosion happened at the Upper School of the Minnehaha Academy around 10:00 am on Wednesday. The blast tore through the school after a gas line was ruptured by contractors working on the campus during a remodel. 82 year old John Carlson, a custodian for the school, was remembered as the school’s “biggest cheerleader”. 47 year old receptionist Ruth Berg was engaged to be married.
Both Ruth Berg and John Carlson were killed in the explosion. Byron Duffey, an assistant soccer coach, sustained critical injuries. One other unidentified person was still hospitalized as of Thursday morning, and seven more had been treated and released.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation at this time. School was not in session on Wednesday due to the summer break, and fire officials say the number of dead or injured would have been much higher if students had been on campus.
