“Off-Duty Firefighter Killed”
VENICE, CALIFORNIA (April 9, 2017) – An off-duty firefighter with the Marietta fire department out of Georgia was killed in a tragic DUI accident on Ocean Avenue, according to a local news source. (map)
Ron C. Herens, a firefighter with the Marietta Fire Department in Georgia, was on vacation with two other firefighters in Southern California. The three were in a vehicle heading through the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Ocean Avenue around 10:30 when their vehicle was struck by a DUI driver that ran a red light at over 80 MPH.
Ron Herens was ejected from the vehicle and was tragically pronounced dead at the accident site. His two colleagues sustained major injuries and were rushed to hospitals in unknown condition. The driver that struck them was arrested for DUI, and the investigation is ongoing to determine cause and liability.
