The accident happened around 2:15 pm on October 31st, at the Marigold Mine near Battle Mountain. Nine people were riding in a van at the mine site when the van was run over by a hauling truck for an unknown reason.

Pete Kuhn, a safety superintendent at the mine, was tragically killed in the accident. Also killed was one of the trainees in the van, identified as Omar Bernal. The 7 other trainees inside the van all sustained minor injuries in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation at this time to determine cause and liability. Marigold Mine is one of the largest gold mines in the United States, and is owned by Silver Standard Resources. Operations at the mine were temporarily suspended after Tuesday’s accident.
