The accident happened around 7:30 pm at the intersection of Caulfield Lane and South McDowell Boulevard. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Linda Bartizal, was walking against a red light in a crosswalk when she was struck by a 48-year-old woman driving a van. The impact was strong enough to throw Bartizal almost 50 feet. The van then fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Bartizal was rushed to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, including broken ribs, a severed spinal cord, a punctured lung and a fractured pelvis. She tragically succumbed to her injuries and died the following day.
Authorities located a van with front end damages about 30 minutes after the accident, but were unable to locate the registered owner, who was identified as 48-year-old June Humphrey. Humphrey turned herself in to police on Tuesday and was arrested. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
