Paulette Mettille Struck by Semi While Trying to Rescue Turtle

LELAND, ILLINOIS (June 24, 2017) – Paulette Mettille was struck by a car while trying to remove a turtle from the road on Saturday morning , according to a local news source. (map)

The accident happened around 9:56 am in the 3300 block of Route 23 in Dayton Township. 68 year old Paulette J. Mettille was traveling south on Route 23 when she saw a turtle in the road. She stopped her car and was attempting to remove the turtle from the road, when she was struck by a semi truck driven by 57 year old Richard Lee Jones.

Paulette Mettille was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition as a result of the accident. Richard Lee Jones was cited for failure to reduce speed. The accident remains under open investigation to determine cause and liability.
