PACOIMA, CALIFORNIA (January 26, 2017) – A fatal wrong-way crash occurred early Thursday morning, at approximately 1:56 a.m., on 5 Freeway, near Van Nuys Boulevard off-ramp. (map)
The California Highway Patrol reported that the collision happened when a 2007 GMC Acadia SUV driving southbound in the northbound lanes, ran into a 2003 Mercedes-Benz. Both parties were discovered trapped within their vehicles.
Emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene. The driver of a Mercedes-Benz, Jameel McCrary of Palmdale, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be freed by emergency crews. The driver was hospitalized for treatment of major injuries and later placed under arrest.
CHP is currently investigating the possibility of alcohol and/or drugs as a factor in the accident.
