BARTOW, FLORIDA (December 24, 2017) – Olivia Shannon was identified as one of the five people killed in a Cessna plane crash in Florida on Christmas Eve, according to a local news source. (map)
The small plane took off from the Bartow Municipal Airport around 7:15, en route to Key West for a Christmas getaway. The plane was carrying five people at the time, including the pilot. The small aircraft crashed just after takeoff near the airport, and immediately burst into flames upon impact.
One of those killed in the accident was identified as 24 year old Olivia Shannon. Oliva’s father John was the pilot, and also on board was Oliva’s sister Victoria, Victoria’s husband Peter, and a family friend identified as Krista Clayton. All five were tragically killed in the accident.
While the official cause of the accident has yet to be released, initial reports indicate that visibility at the time of the crash was extremely low. A fog curtain had settled in over the airport, causing visibility to drop to almost 0. It is unknown if there was anyone in the airport control tower at the time of the accident.
Cessna 340’s have a history of accidents. Cessna is one of the leading small plane manufacturers in the United States. The Cessna 340 was first produced in 1971, but was delayed for almost a year… because the prototype plane was involved in a fatal crash that killed the pilot. The crash was later found to be a manufacturing defect.
The cause for Sunday’s accident is still under investigation at this time, and facts are still being released. Lexton Law is still researching this accident, and the NTSB is on scene to investigate the plane crash. Lexton Law is a leading law firm that deals with aviation accidents.
“Sadly, there are no words that can comfort all family members and friends as they cope with such tragic loss,” said the attorneys from Lexton Law. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all parties affected in this tragedy as they try to piece together what happened.”
