OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (March 28, 2017) – Edwarn Anderson has been identified as one of three victims that was killed in a fire at a building on San Pablo Avenue, according to a local news source. (map)
The fire broke out in a transient housing complex at 2551 San Pablo Ave in Oakland. The 40 unit building had been converted into transitional housing for those struggling with homelessness and addiction in 2010. Since then, it had received multiple code violations including many for the fire alert and suppression system. The fire broke out around 5:30 am, leaving many trapped inside the building.
Fifteen people were rescued by firefighters and by using makeshift ropes from bedsheets, to get out of third floor windows. Three people were unable to escape, and were tragically killed in the fire. 64 year old Edwarn Anderson was one of the three people that were unable to escape. The other two have been identified as a church deacon and a woman who recently moved into the building. The owner of the building, Keith Kim, has been largely unavailable for comment.
The fire remains under investigation at this time to determine cause and liability, and
