100 Train Passengers Injured in Train Accident in Brooklyn Hub
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – A jam-packed rush-hour train crashed at the end of a platform as it was pulling into a the Brooklyn hub this morning at around 8:30 a.m. Passengers were hurled in all directions and into each other and against the sides of the train.
At least 100 passengers were injured, including one passenger who sustained a broken leg. The accident occurred when the front of the slow traveling train rammed into a bumping block as it was pulling into the Atlantic terminal.
The train left the tracks, smashing into a small structure causing one of the rails to pierce the the floor of a train car, according to authorities. Many of the injured people on the train had been standing prior to the crash which might have been the cause for such a large scale of injuries. Many people were removed on stretchers.
Furthermore, several people sat stunned on the pavement outside while they held ice packs up to their wounds or held onto rescuers for support. Many report that it sounded as if a bomb had gone off. Federal Investigators are in the process of determining whether a modern bumper or other barriers at the terminal might have prevented so many injuries.
According to investigators, the train originated in the far Rockaway section of Queens and was transporting around 450 passengers. “People just went flying,” passenger Donette Smith told The New York Times. “It was very scary.”
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent out a panel of investigators.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Thomas Prendergast stated, there is “a signal system that controls it coming in at limited speeds. But when you’re getting to the end it’s the locomotive engineer’s responsibility. And the train’s brakes have to work. All those things have to be looked at in the investigation.”
“Almost one death or injury per day occurs on the rail system in the United States. Many of these tragic deaths are avoidable, the rail system is antiquated and needs a complete overhaul to ensure the safety of pedestrians, drivers, and train passengers,” said Attorney from Lexton Law Firm.
