The accident happened around 10:30 am at the Verla International plant on Temple Hill Road in New Windsor. Multiple explosions rocked the facility, injuring 26 workers and 7 responding firemen. The black smoke that spilled from the building was said to be “acrid”, and it was believed a chemical fire was burning in the building.

Earlier this year, the plant was hit with nine violations from OSHA regarding exit maintenance and the use of flammable liquids . 6 of those 9 violations were reportedly “serious”.
