MERCED, CALIFORNIA (January 2, 2017) – A fatal pedestrian versus car collision occurred on Monday evening, at approximately 7:46 p.m., on Highway 99, near Collier Road. (map)

The pedestrian, identified as Doney Alvarez, was crossing the northbound lanes of Highway 99, when he was struck by the first vehicle in the fast lane. Alvarez was then hit by a 2013 Hyundai Accent, as the driver was unable to avoid the collision. Sadly, Doney Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first driver fled the scene, but the second driver remained at the scene to speak with the police.

Police are searching for the first driver, the vehicle is suspected to be a dark blue 2013 to 2017 Ford Fusion. The passenger-side mirror was found at the scene and would be missing from the vehicle in question.
