The CHP reported that a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500, driven by James Arthur Merrick, was traveling eastbound on Anna Sparks Way onto Central Avenue when he struck the teenager around 8:07 p.m.
The CHP states that Merrick allowed his vehicle to drive onto the shoulder of Central Avenue and continuing eastbound until colliding with a light pole. Merrick made an attempt to flee the scene until he was stopped by multiple witnesses. The female pedestrian was transported to Mad River Community Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Merrick was arrested and was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.
“The conventional wisdom is that the pedestrian always has the right of way. This is not always the case and creates a dangerous situation. Many pedestrian deaths and injuries can be avoided by both drivers and pedestrians being alert and cautious,”said the attorneys from Lexton Law, a personal injury law firm.
