RIO LINDA, CALIFORNIA (August 3, 2017) – A pilot was killed on Thursday after a small plane crashed into a Sacramento County neighborhood, according to a local news source. (map)
71 year old Marshall Michaelian was piloting a single engine, home built Lancair IV-P aircraft on Thursday afternoon around 3:00 pm. The plane reportedly flying south at a low altitude when it abruptly turned, struck power lines, and then crashed into a large chicken coop in the backyard of a home at 28th and U Street in Rio Linda.
Michael Michaelian was tragically killed in the accident. Nobody on the ground was hurt as a result of the accident, and the plane reportedly narrowly missed a home with people inside. The accident remains under investigation by the FAA and the NTSB at this time to determine what caused the plane to crash.
This is the second instance of a Lancair plane crash resulting in a fatality in the last three weeks. On July 17th, a Lancair Evolution occupied by two men crashed into a golf course in Mesa, Arizona, killing both parties. The investigation into that crash is still ongoing as well.
“Sadly, there are no words that can comfort all family members and friends as they cope with such tragic loss,” said attorney West Seegmiller. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all parties affected in this tragedy as they try to piece together what happened.” West Seegmiller is a leading expert in aviation crashes and is a pilot himself.
