LUMBERTON, INDIANA (May 16, 2017) – Five people were killed in a terrible accident on Interstate 95 on Tuesday, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 1:00 pm on Interstate 95 in Robeson County. A tanker truck driven by a 68 year old man failed to slow as it approached a construction zone where traffic had been merged into one lane, and he struck the back of a pickup truck carrying a family of four. The pickup truck was pushed into the back of a Ford Explorer, and the Explorer was pushed into a Ford Escape. The tanker truck also struck a Freightliner semi truck at speeds hard enough to ignite the fuel carried in the tanker truck, and the Freightliner struck a second semi truck from the impact.
The family of four in the pickup truck was tragically pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the accident. They have been identified as 32 year old Elise Spennati, 25 year old Cole Spennati, 4 year old Aila Spennati, and 1 year old Sianna Spennati. The driver of the tanker truck, 68 year old Michael Bricker, was also killed in the accident. Three people from the Ford Explorer and one person from the Ford Escape were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but are in stable condition. The two semi truck drivers were uninjured in the accident.
The fire from the crash spread to surrounding wooded areas, and Interstate 95 was closed for almost 12 hours after the accident. The accident remains under open investigation at this time to determine cause and liability. It is unknown at this time why Michael Bricker failed to stop at the construction zone, but authorities are investigating many facts.
