LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (April 13, 2017) – A 57-year-old man was injured in a hit-and-run collision on Thursday evening at 87th Place and south Main Street, near the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. (map)
The incident occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m., when the driver of a Nissan Altima, traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, struck the man who helping conduct traffic around the church after services, according to KTLA News. The driver of the Nissan fled the scene. An LAPD Officer witnessed the driver and a brief pursuit ensued, according to Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Dave Ferry.
The 57-year-old sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital where he is currently in critical condition. The driver of the Nissan was later arrested several blocks away after abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The driver is a known felon and faces charges of felony evading of arrest, causing bodily injury to a person. LAPD is currently investigating the accident.
