BILLERICA, MASSACHUSETTS (May 3, 2017) – Leezandra Aponte has been identified as one of the three people killed in a tragic accident at an auto auction on Wednesday morning, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 10:13 am at the Lynnway Auto Auction on Charter Way. A Jeep was being moved through the building by an employee of the auction when it suddenly accelerated, striking a wall and multiple people near the safe lane.
Three people, including Leezandra Aponte, were tragically pronounced dead as a result of the accident. Several people were in critical condition, but at least nine people suffered injuries and were hospitalized as a result of the accident.
An investigation into the incident has already begun. The employee operating the Jeep was described as a man in his 70s. This is not the first such incident at an auto auction. In 2015, multiple people were injured at an auto auction in Framingham, Massachusetts, when a 78 year old man accelerated suddenly into a crowd of people, injuring several. Nobody was killed in that incident, as opposed to Wednesday’s accident which tragically claimed three lives.
Initial investigations also show Lynnway Auctions has a history of OSHA violations for unsafe practices concerning their vehicles for sale. In 2014 they were fined for “failing to require the use of traffic control devices while employees performed maintenance tasks around moving vehicles.” Concerns have also been raised about the sudden acceleration recalls surrounding the 2006 Jeep. A 52 year old man was killed in 2006 when a Jeep Grand Cherokee ran over him in a car wash after an incident of sudden acceleration. The investigation into the tragic accident at Lynnway Auctions is underway at this time.
