GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY (March 18,2018) –Two freight trains collided on Sunday night, spilling unknown material that caused a residential evacuation, ignited a fire, and injured four people on board the train.
Around 11:15 p.m., one of the freight trains came to an unexpected stop and the other train plowed straight into it. The collision caused both trains to derail off the tracks. A fire that resulted from the crash, in addition to the possibility of potentially dangerous material being spilled from one of the train’s freights. Officials conducted an evacuation of residents in the surrounding area.
Four train crew members were taken to the hospital from the incident after the crash. Three have been released without any major injuries, and one employee is still being evaluated.
At the time, it was unclear whether the potentially dangerous material that was being carried by one of the train cars was leaking. The accident is still being investigated, it is unclear whether both trains were traveling at the recommended speed for the section of the track where they collided. The identities of the four individuals that were injured remain unknown at this time.
