PANA, ILLINOIS (June 14, 2017) – John Castle, an 89 year old man, was sadly identified as one of the five victims killed in a tragic train accident on 1800 County Road on Wednesday evening, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened on County Road 1800, near the intersection with Route 16. Around 7 pm, a car carrying 5 senior citizens attempted to cross the tracks heading south, and were struck on the driver’s side of the car by a freight train.
89 year old John Castle was tragically pronounced dead as a result of the accident. The other four people inside the van were also killed in the accident, and have been identified as Herbert Castle, Nell Castle, Mary Castle, and Mary Pugsley. Three of the five were pronounced dead at the scene, and two were rushed to area hospitals where they tragically succumbed to their injuries as well. The accident remains under open investigation to determine cause and liability, however initial reports indicate the crossing was not equipped with gate arms or warning lights.
