SAN LOUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA (April 6, 2018) – Jesus Ontiveros, 45-years-old, and Cathleen Fox were tragically killed in a deadly car collision on Friday morning at the Cholame “Y,” where Highways 46 and Highway 41 meet. (map)
At 6 a.m., Cathleen Ann Fox of Paso Robles was traveling eastbound on Highway 46 in a Chevy Cruise. Fox made an unsafe turning movement into the westbound lane and brushed a vehicle that was traveling in the westbound direction, which then crashed into another eastbound pick-up truck. The Chevy continued to travel in the westbound lane and slammed head on into a westbound minivan filled with farm workers.
Jesus Ontiveros of Tulare was identified as the driver of the minivan, and was tragically killed as a result of the deadly crash. Fox was taken to Sierra Vista Hospital and died from the injuries she sustained. The passengers in the mini van suffered sever injuries and were also transported to the hospital.
An alarming number of four vehicles were involved in this deadly chain collision; however, Highway 46 and 41 “Y” is not foreigner to car accidents and is notorious for the car crash that results in the dead of actor James Dean. It is unknown at the time why Fox drifted into the other lane. It is unclear whether safety improvements, for example the installation of an overpass at this highway, could’ve prevented this tragic loss. The city of Cholame may be held accountable for poor road design. Jordan Cunningham, and Assembly member at Cal Trans, announced two weeks ago that they would build a new grade separated interchange at that spot.
