“Big-Rig vs. SUV Collision”

PLUMAS COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (April 4, 2017) – California Highway Patrol reported a serious head-on big rig crash on Tuesday afternoon on Highway 70 at the Grizzly Dome Tunnel. (map)

The accident was reported at 1:10 p.m., when an eastbound 2008 Chevy Tahoe, driven by 51-year-old Ginger L. Martindale, was traveling in the Grizzly Dome Tunnel, collided with a 1989 Peterbilt, driven by 26-year-old Stewart R. Airth. The semi truck had veered to the right causing the back of the trailer to cross over into the eastbound lanes and into the path of the oncoming Tahoe. The Tahoe collided into the left rear tire of the semi’s trailer and ripping the rear axle from the trailer, according to the CHP report. The Tahoe hit the north wall of the tunnel and came to a stop. Airth was able drive the semi out of the tunnel and rest on the south shoulder of the roadway. The impact caused all airbags in the Tahoe to deploy

The other occupants in the Chevy Tahoe were 36-year-old Rose A. Campbell, a 12-year-old girl, a 17-month-old boy, and a 5-week-old baby girl. All five occupants sustained injuries; Martindale, Campbell, and the 5-week-old baby girl suffered major injuries and the 12-year-old girl and 17-month-old boy sustained minor injuries. Cal Fire-Butte County crews were dispatched to the scene to find one person still pinned inside the vehicle, all five occupants were freed from the Chevy Tahoe. Four occupants were airlifted to Enloe Medical Center, the infant was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Airth was not injured in the collision and was reported as wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.
