Frank Lee Jones Dies from Injuries Sustained in TECO Accident

TAMPA, FLORIDA (July 10, 2017) – Frank Lee Jones tragically died on Saturday from injuries sustained in an industrial accident on June 29th, according to a local news source. (map)

The accident happened on June 29th in Tampa at the TECO Big Bend power plant. One employee and five contractors were working to remove a blockage in a molten slag tank when the slag erupted onto the workers.

Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, and four more were hospitalized. One of those hospitalized died on Wednesday, July 5th, and 55 year old Frank Lee Jones succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, July 8th. Frank Lee Jones was a contract worker with Gaffin Industrial Services, and had been working there for 27 years. Frank Jones’ stepson, Gary Marine Jr, is one of the two men who remains hospitalized after the accident.

This is not the first fatal accident for TECO’s Big Bend plant. In 2014, a contractor at the plant was killed when he slipped and fell off a catwalk, sparking an OSHA investigation.
