FIRESTONE, COLORADO (April 27, 2017) – Mark Martinez and Joey Irwin were both tragically killed, and Mark’s wife Erin was badly injured in an explosion at the Martinez’s home in the 6300 block of Twilight Avenue on Monday, April 17th, according to a local news source. (map)
The accident happened around 4:45 pm at Mark and Erin Martinez’s home at 6312 Twilight Avenue. Mark Martinez and his brother in law Joey Irwin were working on the water heater in their basement when it exploded. Mark and Joey were both tragically killed, and Erin Martinez was badly injured and pinned under debris in the home. Construction crews at the scene used a forklift to help pull debris off Erin before emergency services arrived.
An investigation into the explosion is ongoing, but Anadarko Petroleum Corp is shutting down 3,000 vertical wells in the area. One of the wells was within 170 feet of the Martinez home, and was built in 1993. The amount of “vintage” wells in the area has raised concerns with many residents, and Anadarko Petroleum has decided to voluntarily shut down the 3,000 wells as a precaution until the investigation concludes. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is also investigating the explosion.
