At 10:30 a.m., the deadly hit-and-run incident happened at the Illinois and 21st street intersection of San Francisco. Initial reports indicates that a man, identified as 33-year-old Mark Dennis, is the suspected driver of the white van that mowed down the pedestrians. Dennis and the five pedestrians were arguing on the street when the dispute elevated to a physical exchange of aggression. Dennis started swinging an ax at the other party, and one of the pedestrians used a belt to retaliate back. Dennis retreated to his van, and made a thee-point-turn; consequently mowing down the ill-dated pedestrians with it.
Eliseo Lopez, 34-years-old, was killed on the scene and the other four victims sustained severe injuries and were transported to San Francisco General Hospital. While two of the victims were released from the hospital, two men still remain at the hospital, one in critical condition and other other in serious condition.
The crash may have been catalyzed by a seemingly aggressive confrontation between Dennis and the group of five. Officials are continuing their investigation on the incident, however, initial sources indicate that the Dennis appeared to be physically aggressive upon initially exiting his vehicle and swinging his ax at the five pedestrians.
Dennis has been accused with one count on murder, four counts on attempted murder, six counts on assault with a deadly weapon, and four counts on assault causing great bodily injury. He is currently in the San Francisco County jail.
