The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. when Cabrales, driving a Hyundai sedan, collided into the semi truck that was illegally parked. One witness said that Cabrales was traveling approximately 45 mph then slowed prior to colliding with the semi sheering off the top of he Hyundai, according to Chula Vista police Sgt. Eric Tarr.
Cabrales was pronounced dead at the scene. Another witness said that the semi was parked along the east curb of Eastlake Parkway, in a painted bike lane as the truck driver walked into Jack-in-the-Box restaurant.
An investigation is ongoing to determine if the illegally parked semi was the primary cause of the accident and to see why Cabrales didn’t stop or change lanes to avoid the collision.
