COSTA MESA: Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Head-On Collision on 405 Freeway, north of 55 Freeway

COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA (January 8, 2017) – A disastrous accident occurred on Sunday, at approximately 4 a.m., on 405 Freeway, north of 55 Freeway. (map)

California Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred when a silver 2001 Ford Mustang was driving south in the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2004 Ford SUV. The SUV became engulfed in flames after the crash. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the 36-year-old male who was driving the SUV is being withheld at this time. The wrong-way driver has been identified as 29-year-old Jose Garcia Lopez of Fullerton.

CHP is currently investigating the accident.
