HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA (December 24, 2017) – California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Camilleri was tragically killed on Sunday after a DUI driver hit the patrol car he was in on Interstate 880, according to an article by Fox 40. (map)
The accident happened around 11:20 pm on Sunday. 33 year old Andrew Camilleri Sr was a passenger in a patrol vehicle parked on the shoulder of the southbound side of the 880 Freeway. A 22 year old resident of Hayward that is believed to have been under the influence drifted onto the shoulder before rear ending the officer’s SUV hard enough to almost completely crush it.
Andrew Camilleri was tragically pronounced dead as a result of the accident. His partner, Jonathan Velasquez, sustained injuries in the accident. The driver that struck their vehicle was identified only as a 22 year old man from Hayward, and was also hospitalized. He is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time of the collision, and the investigation is ongoing.
Officer Andrew Camilleri had been with the CHP for almost a year and a half at the time of the accident. He leaves behind wife Rosanna, a 12 year old daughter, and two sons ages 6 and 2. Governor Jerry Brown has issued a statement regarding the tragic accident and expressing his condolences.
