The accident occurred during an exercise in which a sailboat deliberately overturned in the water. Capsizing is part of the boating lesson.

The instructor in a Zodiac inflatable boat pulled the boy into his boat. The boat accelerated and the boy fell off causing the propeller to hit him. The instructor was able to pull the boy back into the boat and perform CPR, according to police officials.

The 12-year-old boy sustained major injuries to the chest area. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The 18-year-old instructor was taken to the hospital an was treated for shock, according to Suffolk County Police Sgt. James Scimone. An investigation is ongoing.

“Sadly, there are no words that can comfort this young boy’s family and friends as they cope with such an incredible loss,” said the attorneys from Lexton Law Firm. “The thoughts and prayers of our staff are with them, as well as the young people who were injured, as they try to piece together what happened.”
