The accident happened on Wednesday evening on the 101 Freeway near Willits. Two 19 year old girls, identified as Jenna M Santos and Natalie Griffin were heading home from Mendocino when their vehicle began to hydroplane for unknown reasons, sending them off the road, overturning and landing in a nearby creek
19 year old Jenna M. Santos, the driver, was tragically trapped inside the crashed vehicle, and was trapped underwater. The passenger, 19 year old Natalie Griffin, was able to escape out of a broken back window. She was able to cling to a tree in the creek and attempted to scream for help for the next 12 hours as temperatures dropped into the 20s. Natalie Griffin was able to swim to land the next morning, and flagged down a driver on the highway. The investigation is ongoing to determine cause and liability.
