BIBB COUNTY, GEORGIA (July 11, 2017) – Three people were killed and ten were injured in an accident on Tuesday on Interstate 16, according to a local news source. (map)
A tractor trailer driven by a man identified as Gerard Thompson was traveling westbound on Interstate 16 on the night of Tuesday, July 11th when it hit a pickup truck. The pickup truck was knocked into several other vehicles including a church bus as a result of the impact. After the collision, the semi truck, the pickup truck, and several other vehicles caught on fire.
81 year old Majorie Jones, a passenger in the church bus, was tragically pronounced dead as a result of the accident. Also killed was 84 year old Robert Day, who was in a Chevrolet Cobalt at the time of the accident. The third person killed has not been identified at this time. The bus belonged to Greater New Friendship Baptist Church, and the occupants were headed to a service in Macon at the time of the accident. The bus driver, Gerard Thompson, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving.
