CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA (August 12, 2017) – Two State Police officers were killed in a helicopter crash in Charlottsville on Saturday, according to a local news source. (map)
The helicopter, a Bell 407, was patrolling above the riots in Charlottesville on Saturday afternoon with Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates aboard. Around 4:15 pm, the helicopter crashed for an unknown reason in a wooded area off Old Farm Road in Albemarle County.
Both 48 year old H. Jay Cullen and 40 year old Berke M. M. Bates were tragically killed in the accident. The cause of the crash is still unknown at this time, but the FAA, the NTSB, and the Virginia State Police are all working together to investigate the crash.
