The accident happened around 3:20 am on the southbound side of the 5 Freeway near the 91 Freeway. A man identified only as being in his 20s was driving a Honda Accord northbound in the slow lane of the southbound freeway at around 70 mph. He then sped up to 100 mph before crashing head on into a silver Chevrolet Suburban driven by a man in his 50s.
The drivers of both cars were pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the accident. The accident remains under open investigation to determine cause and liability. It is unknown at this time why the driver entered the freeway going the wrong way, or why he was driving at such high speeds.
